 Artist in Residence

2024

We are pleased to introduce Claudia Del Fierro, our first artist in residence, in collaboration with The Clemente Center. She is a visual artist who works in a variety of media including video, photography, and installation.

This project is possible thanks to the collaboration of Gobierno de Chile, The Clemente Center, and Kates-Ferri Projects

Her projects use observation, action, and performative practices to point out or reconstruct situations through personal ethnographies, and her work has been shown in the IV Mercosur Biennial, VI Havana Biennial, XIII Bienal de Artes Mediales, Chile, as well as exhibitions throughout the US, Europe and Latin America.

In recent years Claudia has focused her research on the 20th century textile industry and workers movements in Chile. Her piece La Fábrica (2017-2022) brings together the voices of members of the textile community of Tomé, Chile—former workers, their families and neighbors, as well as cultural agents and activists—with the purpose of collecting oral histories and images that, in a unified testimony, ensures the right of the community to defend its history and preserve its heritage.

While here in NYC, she'll be exploring the local textile industry, particularly on the Lower East Side, connecting with neighbors of former textile families and those who still work in the clothing sector and reviewing archival materials. This is the first stage of creating a video work that operates within the social and political dialogue with the community, past and present, as they actively choose what to remember. In order to problematize those dialogues and the notions of heritage and community themselves, the work will be restructured as new materials and narrative continue to come into played.
